We sat huddled under the wooden computer desk as thunder
shook our dark house. I grinned secretly
with excitement as lightning light up our small living room. I loved thunder
and lightning, but Alex was trembling like a leaf next to me so I kept my
excitement to myself. We waited silently under the desk for my Mom to come back
down stairs to take her home. Mom was taking forever to find a flash light and
an umbrella. I glanced at Alex her hands were over her ears, her knees pulled
to her chest, and her eyes were squeezed tightly shut. Sadly I looked over at
the window today wasn’t turning out the way I had hoped it would. I sighed
softly we had been having so much fun before the thunder had started. I don’t
understand what she finds so scary it is after all just sound. Mom finally came
running down the stairs with a flash light in one hand and the umbrella under
her arm. Her hair was pulled back and she had a warm sweater and jeans on. She
shined the flashlight in our direction and gave us both a funny look. “What are you two doing under there?” I
smiled sheepishly and crawled out “we were hiding”. Mom motioned for us to sit
on the stairs and handed us both our shoes, and then our jackets. Carefully she
opened the front door the rain was pouring off the carport roofs and pooling on
the sidewalk and in the parking lot. Our boots squeaked on the wet ground as we
huddled under the umbrella and headed up the little street to Alex’s house. Mom
knocked on the front door Alex’s Mom looked surprised when she opened it but
smiled sweetly “Back so soon? Did something happen?” Mom smiled apologetically
back “Alex wanted to come home, she was afraid of the…” just then a loud crack
of thunder sent Alex flying into her Mom’s legs. Her little arms wrapped
tightly around her knees and she buried her head into her Mom’s leg. Her Mom
smiled “the thunder” and gently ran her fingers through Alex’s hair. They
talked for a while and soon we were making our way back down the wet stairs to
the sidewalk. I took a deep breath as we started for home again the air smelled
and tasted sweet and fresh. We were almost home when Mom gave me a funny look
“you aren’t afraid of thunder or lightning…so why were you under the desk too?”
I glanced at her questioning face and quickly looked away. I smiled as I
watched the rain run off the umbrella “cause she was scared and I didn’t want
her to hide alone”. My face and ears suddenly felt a little hot, but that was
the truth I didn’t want to watch her be afraid and I wasn’t sure what I could
have said or done to make her feel better so I had crawled under the desk too.
